The specialist listens to your complaints and investigates the causes of your pain to determine the best course of treatment that ensures quick relief and also prevents further deterioration. He helps you get back to enjoying life with minimally invasive techniques and self-care home remedies that provide long-term relief.

The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back through the hips and buttocks down each leg. The pain is felt almost anywhere along the pathway of the sciatic nerve, known as sciatica pain. It is more likely to follow a path from the lower back to the buttock and the back of a thigh and calf. This pain can vary from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation.

This pain is experienced when a herniated disc or an overgrown bone puts pressure on the part of a nerve that leads to inflammation and numbness in the affected leg. It may feel like a jolt or electric shock and worsen as you cough, sneeze or sit for a long time. Usually, sciatica affects only one side of the body. Some people experience numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in the leg or foot. One part of the leg may be in pain while the other feels numb.

Even though the pain associated with sciatica can be severe, it often goes away within 3 months with conservative treatment. Conservative treatment refers to non-invasive therapies you can do at home to relieve the pain.

At-Home Remedies for Low Back and Leg Pain

These 5 at-home sciatica self-care remedies are a good option if you are experiencing mild to moderate sciatica nerve pain. They also help to condition your body, triggering the release of endorphins that reduce your perception of pain.

Self-Care Tip # 1 – Exercise Is Effective for Pain Relief

It may seem unusual to exercise when you are suffering from pain, but research shows that lying in bed for a long time can further aggravate your back and leg symptoms. Lack of exercise and movement can lead to weakness and stiffness in the back muscles and spinal structures, and they may not be able to prevent back issues. With a controlled, progressive exercise program, you can look forward to addressing, resolving, and preventing recurrences of the underlying causes of pain. The key is to exercise gently, and keep it from turning painful or strenuous.

Low-impact exercises like water aerobics, stationary biking, and yoga can effectively reduce the severity of symptoms and prevent further back issues. Stronger back muscles also support the spine and alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves, which can reduce the frequency and intensity of sciatica episodes. Exercise keeps the joints flexible, and strengthens your core and the muscles of the lower back and abdomen. These muscles support the spine and prevent trauma and strain that may cause additional pain.

Self-Care Tip # 2 – Stretching It out Helps

Incorporating gentle stretching into your daily routine will help you in more than one way. Not only it is an excellent way to improve spinal flexibility and range of motion, but it can also build core and spinal strength that will benefit you in the long run. Most stretches are simple enough to be done while you are watching TV or listening to your favorite music.

Here are some gentle and effective stretches that will relieve sciatic nerve pain.

Reclined Pigeon Pose

Lie down on your back with one foot flat on the floor, and the knee pointed up

Cross the other leg’s ankle over the knee

Reach forward, bringing your upper back off the floor if needed, and grab your shin with both the hands

Pulls your legs towards the chest

Hold this pose for at least five breaths and release

Repeat this stretch for about three to five times

Supine Twist

Lie down on your back and bring your knees towards the chest as much as you can comfortably

Spread both arms

Lower both legs to one side and turn your head in the opposite direction

Hold this pose for at least five breaths

Return to the starting point and this time, repeat on the other side

Repeat both sides for about three to five times

Seated Forward Bend

Sit up straight with your legs stretched out in the front and feet flexed

Inhale and bring your arms up over the head

Exhale and reach your fingers towards the toes and the chest towards the thighs

Hold this post for at least five breaths and release

Repeat this stretch for about three to five times

Cat-Cow Stretches

Start by getting on all fours with your spine in neutral

Inhale and arch your back and move your stomach toward the floor

Exhale and come through neutral until your back is bowed with the upper back reaching for the ceiling

Come back to the neutral position

Repeat this stretch at least 10 to 15 times

Bird-Dogs

Start by getting on all fours with a neutral spine

Inhale as you straighten and raise an opposing arm and leg, the left arm should be pointing forward while the right foot should be pointing backward or vice versa

Hold this posture for about five breaths

Return to neutral and repeat with the other arm and leg

Repeat this stretch for about three to five times

It is best to learn proper stretching from an experienced instructor who can guide you for low back and leg pain. As you work up to other general strength, core muscle strengthening, and aerobic exercises, it will keep the spine strong and help you fight the pain.

Self-Care Tip # 3 – Correct Your Posture

Sciatica pain can be controlled or relieved by correcting posture. If you work at a desk or sit in the same position for too long, it can spike sciatica pain. The best way to prevent this is to switch your posture every 20 minutes and sit with your head aligned with the hips. It takes the pressure off the spine and reduces sciatica pain symptoms. Taking frequent breaks from sitting can also relieve the strain from the spine and make you feel better.

You can also try the Alexander Technique to release unnecessary muscle tension. This technique teaches improved posture and movement, which is believed to reduce and prevent problems caused by unhealthy habits. You are taught to be more aware of your body so that you can sit, stand and move more comfortably. Correct posture for sitting and walking can play a significant role in alleviating the low back and leg pain associated with sciatica.

Self-Care Tip # 4 – Apply an Ice Pack and Heating Pad

Alternating heat and ice therapy can provide immediate relief from sciatica nerve pain. Ice helps to reduce inflammation, while heat promotes blood flow to the painful area and eases the pain. First, apply an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables to the affected area to bring down the pain and swelling. Always use a barrier like a towel or cloth to protect your skin when using ice as direct exposure can result in frostbite. Keep it on for about 20 minutes several times a day.

Switch to a hot pad or heating pad after a few days, or you can use it an hour after applying the ice pack. Apply heat for about 20 minutes at a time after every 2 to 3 hours. Heat and ice also help to ease painful muscle spasms that accompany sciatica and make it more stressful for you.

Try a cycle of on-off-on-off, alternating between heat and ice, and take a break to see how it works for you. You will learn which therapy best relieves your discomfort.

Self-Care Tip # 5 – Check Out Over-The-Counter Medications

Over-the-counter medications can reduce the pain, inflammation, and swelling accompanied by sciatica. Acetaminophen as well as NSAIDs work well for muscle spasms. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are believed to be a better option as they ease the sciatica symptoms when they strike. There are many easily available over-the-counter medications that you can use to keep the pain and discomfort down.

If you cannot take NSAIDS for any reason, acetaminophen is an effective alternative. However, these medications come with health risks, and long-term use is not suggested. Taking too much at once or using them for prolonged periods can have dangerous side effects, and you should make an effort to discuss their dosage and duration of usage with your doctor.

It is best to consult your healthcare provider about the conservative approach you are trying for pain relief. If you have been dealing with sciatica for some time or have already tried any of the remedies that resulted in debilitating low pain and leg pain, seek immediate medical attention.

When to See Your Doctor for Sciatica Pain?

Every person may experience different symptoms and varying degrees of pain with sciatica. The type and intensity of pain you go through, as well as the causes behind the pain, are not similar for two people. Some people find relief with self-care home remedies within a few days, while for some people, these remedies take time to work.

If your pain does not seem to be lessening and self-care treatments like ice and heat, stretching, and over-the-counter medications are not having the desired effect, consult your doctor. Pain control specialists at Redefine Healthcare determine the causes behind your symptoms and come up with the best solutions to help you feel better.

Some sciatica symptoms can turn into medical emergencies, and delaying treatment can lead to or cause permanent nerve damage. Call your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of these symptoms:

Severe pain in the lower back and legs, which is not subsiding with over-the-counter medications

Nerve-related symptoms such as weakness, numbness, tingling, or electric shock-like pain in your body

The pain has not improved after 2 weeks

The pain worsens, even after you are using self-care home remedies

Loss of bladder and bowel control

Do not take your low back and leg pain lightly and delay seeing a doctor. Acute sciatica may eventually turn into chronic sciatica if you do not seek timely and proper treatment. If you are not careful, persistent pain may force you to give up your favorite activities and interfere with routine life.

Redefine Healthcare announced that they will offer sacroiliac joint injections to provide relief from sciatica symptoms and lower back pain associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. These joints are located next to the spine, connecting the hip on each side with the sacrum. When one of these joints becomes inflamed or otherwise damaged, it can be painful.

 Book Online
 (732) 906-9600

A sacroiliac joint injection can help diagnose the reason for the patient’s pain and to provide pain relief. These two actions may be separated into an infusion that’s purely diagnostic or purely therapeutic, but it’s also possible to combine them into one injection.

Diagnostic Sacroiliac Joint Injections

A diagnostic injection can be used to confirm suspected dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint. The sacroiliac joint is numbed with a local anesthetic before the dose is given under x-ray guidance to ensure accuracy. Once the numbing medication has been injected, the patient will attempt to reproduce their pain symptoms by performing activities that typically cause pain. If the patient experiences significant pain relief during this time, then the doctor will make a tentative diagnosis of sacroiliac joint dysfunction. If a second test confirms the first diagnosis, then the doctor will recommend treatment.

Therapeutic Sacroiliac Injections

Doctors perform therapeutic sacroiliac injections to relieve the pain associated with sacroiliac joint dysfunction. The injection is performed the same way as a diagnostic injection, except that it includes an anti-inflammatory medication along with the numbing medicine to provide superior pain relief. If the patient’s pain relief is long-lasting after this injection, then they may begin physical therapy to reduce pain even further and help the patient regain their previous levels of activity. These injections may be repeated several times per year to maintain the same level of pain relief and normal function of the joint.

What To Expect After Treatment

One of the best things about sacroiliac joint injections is that they provide effective pain relief without opioid pain medications and significant downtime. In general, patients may experience mild soreness at the injection site for a couple of days. Ice or heat may help. Some patients notice that their pain decreases immediately; in others, pain decreases gradually over several days. Once the numbing medicine wears off, patients may experience increased pain; if this happens, they should limit activities and take prescribed pain medication for the first 24 hours, and this increased pain should subside. Patients may receive a pain log to keep track of their pain for the first two weeks after the procedure. Tracking this information and sharing it with your doctor help them determine the best next steps in your treatment plan.

Redefine Healthcare is pleased to announce that they will now offer same-day interventional spine procedures at their four NJ locations. These procedures include:

 Book Online

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation is a pain-relief procedure involving an electrical current that heats a targeted area of nerve tissue to decrease pain signals from that area. Pain relief from this procedure typically lasts anywhere from six to 12 months. Occasionally, a patient will experience pain relief that lasts for years. Conditions radiofrequency ablation can help include chronic neck or lower back pain as well as joint pain caused by arthritis. Good candidates for this procedure are at least 18 years of age and have been experiencing chronic lower back or neck pain for at least three to six months.

Sympathetic Blocks

Sympathetic blocks work by diagnosing and treating pain caused by the sympathetic nerves. These nerves (part of the sympathetic nervous system) are located on both sides of the spinal column and help control the organs by regulating heart rate, blood flow, and other basic functions. They can also carry pain signals from the peripheral tissues. Symptoms of problems with the sympathetic nerves include pain, swelling, sweating, and changes in color. Sympathetic blocks, as the name suggests, blocks these pain signals and help the patient feel better.

Medial Branch Blocks

The medial branch nerves feed out from the spine’s facet joints and deliver pain signals to the brain. Medial branch blocks are procedures in which an anesthetic is injected to a targeted location in a facet joint. Some patients experience immediate pain relief; when this happens, it can be determined that the facet joint was the source of the pain, making this a diagnostic procedure as well. This procedure is often used with success after the patient has already tried other facet joint injections.

Spinal Cord Stimulator

A spinal cord stimulator is a device that the physician implants in the back to relieve chronic pain. This device sends electrical pulses that interfere with the existing pain-producing nerve impulses. Spinal cord stimulators are often used to treat pain associated with sciatica, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, failed back surgery syndrome, and degenerative disc disease. Your physician may perform a trial procedure to monitor the outcome for a few days to ensure success before recommending a permanent neuro-stimulator.

Epidural Lysis Of Adhesions

Epidural Lysis of adhesions is a procedure used to remove scar tissue in the epidural area. This area is a thin space between the protective layers around the spinal cord and the spinal column inside. The epidural space is padded by fat tissue, blood vessels, and nerve roots and runs the whole length of the spine. Scar tissue and adhesions can cause pain by restricting the natural movement of the local nerves. During this procedure, a mixture of local anesthetics and steroids is injected into the area to reduce inflammation and provide significant pain relief.

If you think these procedures may be right for you, or you’re experiencing chronic back pain, contact Redefine Healthcare today for an appointment.

If you could visualize your nervous system, you would see an incredible branching structure that radiates from the spine and ultimately reaches all the parts of your body. Some of these nerves are long, including the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower spine down into the legs. Sciatica is the name for a painful condition in which the sciatic nerve becomes irritated or pinched due to spinal compression or, in some cases, herniated discs. Other causes for this common concern can include the development of bone spurs near the nerve and a very sedentary lifestyle.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a common condition experienced by millions of Americans per year. Characterized by pain, tingling, or numbness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs, the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down both legs. Injury, compression, or entrapment of the lumbar nerves is among the most common causes of sciatica; the nerve can be compromised by herniated discs, degenerative joint disease, trauma, muscle spasms, degenerative disc disease, or tightness of the piriformis muscle.

Sciatica Symptoms

The most typical sign of sciatica is lower back pain that often radiates down one side of the body into the leg through the buttock. In extreme cases, the pain may reach the knee or even the foot. Sciatica can create an array of other symptoms, including:

Weakness and instability in the affected leg.

Persistent pain when walking or standing for reasonable periods.

Spasms.

Tingling sensations or protracted numbness, or both.

Pain begins with physical activity and subsides quickly when resting.

You may notice that pain from sciatica worsens in cold weather. Muscles tightening up in chilly temperatures can cause the compression of your sciatic nerve to flare up, as air pressure changes that often accompany cold fronts. Dress warmly and consider using electric heating pads in the evening to keep your muscles loose.

Non-Invasive Treatment Choices

Persistent sciatica pain can be frustrating and restrictive, especially if you experience flare-ups when moving about and engaging in daily activities. However, mild sciatica often responds well to non-surgical treatments, many of which patients can navigate independently. Some of the most effective self-care measures for sciatica include:

Avoiding problematic activities and resting more frequently during periods of irritation

Using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and pain

Engaging in some forms of exercise reduces sciatic nerve inflammation. Explore this option
with your doctor.

In some cases, doctors may prescribe patients pain-relieving injections or steroids to help control the pain. A change in activity will sometimes resolve the issue; other times, the pain can persist through these first levels of treatment.

 (732) 906-9600

Does Sciatica Ever Require Surgery?

Doctors manage severe cases of sciatica differently. Injections, such as nerve blockers or prescription muscle relaxants may help patients find relief. If pain continues or worsens beyond these treatments, however, your doctor may suggest surgery as an option for correcting the issue.

Doctors often suggest surgery when sciatica leads to muscle atrophy in chronic cases. In a surgical procedure to relieve sciatica concerns, your practitioner will seek to free the nerve from the adverse conditions causing it to radiate pain signals.

At Redefine Healthcare, we are fully equipped to assist patients in understanding and treating not only sciatica but many other acute and chronic pain conditions as well. Reach out now to schedule an appointment or to find helpful answers to your questions about this condition.

No one wants to suffer an injury while on the job, but it can and does happen—sometimes much more easily than workers may expect. These risks are a large part of why workers’ compensation systems exist: to help manage the risk and provide for workers hurt while on duty. What are some of the most common injuries individuals face at work?

 Book Online
 (732) 906-9600

In many cases, these injuries have to do with the back. Being aware of the risks can help to improve worker vigilance in guarding against injury while making it easier to recognize when something is not right.

Muscle Sprains and Strains

Perhaps the most common of workplace injuries, many workers experience sprains and strains in the muscles of the back each year. Improper lifting form is the most common cause.

Strains can be severe but don’t often result in lasting damage since this type of injury is caused merely by an over-extension or overuse of the affected muscle. Sprains, though, can involve the tearing of ligaments and are often more severe. Sprains can occur when a worker is trying to lift too much quickly or as a result of other workplace trauma.

Slipped/Herniated Discs

In between each of the vertebrae in your spine is a soft pad of cartilage called a disc. Not only does each disc help cushion your spine from impacts, but discs are also what you use to bend and straighten your back.

Severe strain over time can cause these discs to “slip,”; protruding from the spine and pressing onto sensitive nerves. While this condition often causes acute pain, slipped discs can also become a chronic concern and, in some cases, will require surgery to fully correct.

Pinched Nerves

A common side effect of a herniated disc is a “pinched nerve.” A pinched nerve in the back occurs when a nerve becomes compressed by an outside force. This catalyst can be a slipped disc, or it can be the result of bony protrusions from the spine, among other conditions.

Sciatica is one common condition that results from pinched nerves, sending pain shooting down into the leg. Radiating pain is often one of the telltale signs of this condition.

Repetitive Strain Injuries

While many people think of RSIs as wrist-related conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, they can occur in the back as well. Consider a loading dock worker in a warehouse, for example, who must consistently bend down, lift, and stack boxes at or above chest height for weeks at a time. The muscles in the back can weaken and become painful as a result of an RSI while increasing the worker’s risk for sprains, strains, and disc issues.

Here are a few reasons why you should choose Redefine Healthcare for all your workers’ compensation issues.

Same-Day Appointments And A 24-hour Turnaround On Documentation

When an employee sustains an injury at work, it is important for him or her to see a doctor right away for several reasons. Even if the injury seems minor, getting appropriate medical care promptly is essential.

First, early treatment gives an employee the best possible chance of a full recovery—a priority for employees, their families, and their employers. Second, waiting too long to seek treatment creates a larger challenge for employers and insurance companies in determining whether the injury or medical condition is work-related. “Toughing it out” is one of the biggest mistakes that people make when they get hurt at work. Doing so can impede recovery and affect the benefits that workers’ comp coverage provides.

We make time for same-day appointments to help people dealing with workers’ comp claims get the care they need when they need it.

Dedicated Workers’ Compensation Liaison

An injured employee dealing with the workers’ comp process often has a lot to juggle: scheduling and attending doctor’s appointments or hospital visits, obtaining necessary prescription medications and medical equipment, and participating in regular physical therapy sessions, for example. Our dedicated workers’ comp liaison is there to assist everyone involved–the employee, the employer, the doctors, and the insurance company–with seamless communication.

This person helps by serving as a point of contact for all parties, providing information to insurance adjusters, validating the information provided by the worker, and confirming treatment authorization and doctors’ visits. Workers’ comp can be complicated, and having a dedicated liaison trained to handle these cases is a huge help.

 (732) 906-9600

Non-Surgical, Interventional Care

We focus on non-surgical, interventional treatments whenever possible because of their advantages over traditional surgical procedures. Non-surgical interventional treatments are typically less costly than surgery; they also have shorter recovery times and fewer risks. Examples of these types of treatments include physical therapy, epidural injections, nerve blocks, biofeedback, and education on lifestyle changes. We tailor treatment to the individual patient and always do everything that we can to treat the problem effectively using non-invasive, non-surgical methods.

If you suffer a work-related back injury, you may be eligible for workers’ compensation to offset the cost of treatment and missing work due to pain. If you suspect you’ve hurt your back, speak to a doctor without delay to receive a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. In the meantime, take care to observe good habits that can reduce the risk of workplace back injuries, such as proper lifting procedures and regular rest breaks.

Many people with back pain seek chiropractic treatment as a means of holistic pain relief. This form of therapy can help with back pain caused by overuse, sports injuries, accidents, muscle strains, and more. Other reasons for seeking chiropractic care include neck, arm, and leg pain or headaches.

Understanding Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors focus on aligning the musculoskeletal structures of the body by using hands-on spinal manipulation and other treatments. The theory behind chiropractic care is that having the spine appropriately aligned helps enable the body to heal itself. Often, this can occur without medication or surgery. According to Redefine Healthcare sources, chiropractic manipulation can restore mobility to stiff or injured joints after a repetitive stress injury or a traumatic event such as a fall.

Redefine Healthcare can treat several conditions including injuries or illnesses involving the back, shoulders, neck, elbows, hips, ankles, and feet. Chiropractic services focus on manual manipulation of the spine to treat lower back pain. During a chiropractic adjustment, the practitioner identifies and manipulates the vertebrae that exhibit abnormal movement patterns or lack robust functionality. The goals include improving function, increasing the range of motion, and reducing pain.

Chiropractors are healthcare providers that specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions with an emphasis on manual manipulation or adjustment of the spine. A spokesperson for Redefine Healthcare explains, “The goal of chiropractic care is to reduce pain and improve function. We also work to educate patients on ways to look after their health with ergonomics, exercises, and other therapies.”

A typical chiropractic adjustment involves a short-lever, high-velocity arm thrust applied to a vertebra; patients often notice an audible release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. This releases pressure in the joint and brings about a sensation of relief. Occasionally, patients experience mild discomfort, but this discomfort lasts for only a brief time, and most patients are happy with the results of their treatment. Some people see their chiropractor exclusively, and others combine the treatment with conventional medical treatment for a powerful healing combination.”

Types of Chiropractic Treatments

According to Redefine Healthcare, the diversified chiropractic technique may be the most popular type of adjustment used by chiropractors. It is the technique a chiropractor is most likely to use when a patient complains of pain from which they need immediate relief. The diversified method is a way of adjusting a disc herniation, which can cause many cases of neck or back pain. As a patient, you will likely receive this technique if you are experiencing “popping” joints as it can help restore them to normal function.

The Gonstead adjustment is one of the most common techniques used by chiropractors, explains a Redefine Healthcare rep. This technique is used to diagnose and treat a range of issues. For example, if a patient has chronic back pain, the chiropractor will aim to locate the problem area along the spine and make the appropriate adjustments. The Gonstead adjustment involves a thorough analysis of the spine and then realigns it accordingly, decreasing or even eliminating inflammation and pain in the region.

The Logan method of chiropractic care is one of the lowest-force techniques available. The Logan technique emphasizes spinal and pelvic distortions and misalignments that affect the structures of the spine. The gentle pressure used in this method can help realign the bones on the spine, a Redefine Healthcare spokesperson explains: “It is also particularly effective at relieving headaches and migraines. It can release stress and tension and restore balance to the entire body. It can also be used to help manage certain conditions such as scoliosis, pregnancy discomfort, and chronic spine conditions.”

Benefits of Chiropractic Treatments

Chiropractic care is considered a safe and effective treatment for many types of back pain, neck pain, and headaches. As a Redefine Healthcare spokesperson explains, “Chiropractic treatments are great for both chronic and acute pain conditions. Even patients with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis often get excellent results. We also see patients with sciatica, hip pain, scoliosis, and a range of other conditions that all respond favorably to chiropractic treatments.”

Another essential thing to understand about chiropractic care is that it treats the cause of the problem–not just the symptoms. “So many chronic pain patients take medications that mask symptoms rather than treating them,” says Redefine Healthcare. “By contrast, chiropractors work to treat the cause of the pain, which naturally alleviates symptoms. This type of care is a drug-free alternative for many people with pain who wish to decrease or eliminate the pain medications they take that have potentially harmful side effects.”

Chiropractors focus on more than just short-term treatment. A Redefine Healthcare spokesperson says, “Chiropractors help in more ways than just spinal manipulation. We look after the whole person and can advise patients on issues such as nutrition and exercise, which are both essential components of a healthy lifestyle. We help many of our patients with exercises for them to do at home that is designed to treat their specific pain condition, offering them the best odds of recovery.”
