    Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injections

    This procedure involves injecting an anesthetic and anti-inflammatory solution into the epidural space at the intervertebral foramen that contains the disc and nerves. The goal of transforaminal epidural steroid injection is to decrease pain by reducing inflammation and irritation around the disc and nerve roots before they exit the spine. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated on a regular basis to treat conditions like herniated discs, sciatic pain (radiculopathy), spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease. The procedure can be carried out in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar regions. To ensure proper medication placement, all procedures are performed under fluoroscopic guidance (X-ray guidance) in an ambulatory surgical center, fluoroscopy suite, or hospital setting.

    It usually takes about 30 minutes to complete the procedure. For the first 2-3 days after the procedure, the discomfort may increase as the numbing medication wears off. The epidural steroid injections full therapeutic effect and pain relief may take up to 10 days to manifest. An epidural injection’s goal is to reduce inflammation at the site of the problem while also providing enough pain relief for the patient to continue with their rehabilitation program.
